Scales Of War

The world has never been a safe place. Bastions of civilization populate a dark, menacing world—islands of order and reason exist in a land otherwise overrun by dark cults, vile monsters, creatures from the dark edges of the imagination, and worse. Across the world, the rumbling rumours of trouble have begun to surface. Warbands forming in the mountains… Monsters crawling forth from the dark bowels of the world… And people everywhere have begun waking up at night in a cold sweat, uncertain where their feelings of dismay and panic come from…

In the Elsir Vale a nameless dread has spread slowly across the land as rumours abound of raiders attacking outlying farms and villages, travellers vanishing without trace and giants seen abroad in the mountains. Formerly the site of an attack by a great army known as the Red Hand, the Vale has known a generation of peace since they weathered the storm of the Hand and sent them scurrying back into the darkness, but now that seems to be at an end.

The town of Brindol swells with travellers as these rumours spread, some seeking the security that the town's stout walls bring or help for their homes against the threats lurking beyond the fringes of civilisation, while others are simply travelling through and linger in Brindol a little longer than they had planned. Without warning, the peace of the town is shattered, as a hobgoblin band assaults the town. The assault is beaten back but as the dust settles victory proves short-lived. Natives of Brindol have been abducted, and the town’s war museum - dedicated to those fallen in the war against the Red Hand - has been raided and desecrated.

What has gone before

While the councilmen of Brindol discuss and debate how best to respond to the hobgoblin attack one of their number, Eoffram Troyas, taken it upon himself to deal with the problem before the raiders can fully regroup and while the captives still live. To that end he has called upon some of those who showed uncommon valour during the attack to help rescue those taken in the attack, return the treasures stolen and deliver vengeance upon the raiders for their crimes. Gold and glory await their successful return, and if they fail their deaths will weaken the town far less than the loss of Brindol's own soldiery, or so Councilman Troyas argued.

Setting out from Brindol, this small group tracked the hobgoblin trail north-east into the foothills of the Giant's Shield to the ruins of an ancient castle, where the murmur of voices could be heard and the flicker of torchlight seen amongst the ruins…
